Pacific Decadal Oscillation-like variability at a millennial timescale during the Holocene

چکیده
Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the North Pacific exert a great influence on global climate and ecosystem changes. The Decadal Oscillation (PDO) is leading mode of decadal SST variability Pacific. PDO-like at millennial timescale during Holocene still poorly understood. In this study, millennial-scale explored using model–data comparisons. To reduce uncertainties caused by differential age controls, study reconstructs index two types published proxy records, including 1) east–west contrast extratropical 2) PDO-related precipitation anomalies East Asia. These reconstructions reveal coherent changes pattern Holocene, showing positive phases 10.4–8.5 ka BP 3.5–3.0 BP, negative 8.5–3.5 3.0–0.2 BP. Climate simulations suggest that predominantly controlled orbital forcing to phase regime early Holocene. between 3.5 3.0 was probably internal feedback system, which fail capture.

Decadal Variability in the Terrestrial Carbon Budget Caused by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation
The terrestrial carbon dioxide (CO2) budget interacts with the Earth’s climate system on diurnal to centennial and longer time scales, making it critical for climatic prediction and stabilization. Atmospheric observations and global syntheses of CO2 data indicate that the terrestrial biosphere is one the major sources of interannual variability, but the underlying mechanisms operating on differ...
متن کاملDecadal variability of tropical tropopause temperature and its relationship to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation
Tropopause temperatures (TPTs) control the amount of stratospheric water vapour, which influences chemistry, radiation and circulation in the stratosphere, and is also an important driver of surface climate. Decadal variability and long-term trends in tropical TPTs as well as stratospheric water vapour are largely unknown. Here, we present for the first time evidence, from reanalysis and state-...
متن کاملThe Forcing of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation*
The Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO), defined as the leading empirical orthogonal function of North Pacific sea surface temperature anomalies, is a widely used index for decadal variability. It is shown that the PDO can be recovered from a reconstruction of North Pacific sea surface temperature anomalies based on a first-order autoregressive model and forcing by variability of the Aleutian low...
متن کاملThe Pacific Decadal Oscillation and Pacific Salmon Production
Retrospective analyses of Pacific Basin climate records highlight the existence of a pan-Pacific interdecadal climate oscillation. We find strong evidence for coherent patterns of interdecadal variability in Pacific winds, sea level pressures, and upper ocean temperatures. Collectively, the ocean-atmosphere pattern of variability has been labeled the “Pacific Decadal Oscillation”, or PDO. An in...
متن کاملOrigins of the midlatitude Pacific decadal variability
Analysis of multiple climate simulations shows much of the midlatitude Pacific decadal variability to be composed of two simultaneously occurring elements: One is a stochastically driven, passive ocean response to the atmosphere while the other is oscillatory and represents a coupled mode of the ocean-atmosphere system. ENSO processes are not required to explain the origins of the decadal varia...
